
A source from the Beiras and Serra da Estrela Sub-Regional Command reported at 21h20 that four people sustained minor injuries in the incident, with triage still ongoing at the site where more than 160 personnel are present.
The commander of the Fundão Volunteer Firefighters, José Sousa, stated that the four individuals with minor injuries were transported to Covilhã hospital.
Six other individuals received assistance on-site. A total of 84 passengers were aboard the train, he added.
The Intercity train, which departed from Guarda heading to Lisbon, was carrying 118 passengers, according to a statement from CP – Comboios de Portugal.
The passengers are being transferred to buses, the statement also noted.
The incident, which was alerted at 20h00, occurred in Alpedrinha, Fundão municipality, Castelo Branco district, leading to the closure of the Beira Baixa line.
José Sousa from the Beiras and Serra da Estrela Sub-Regional Command had previously mentioned that the accident involved an Intercity train colliding with a freight transport truck, which caused a fire in the vehicle and at least two train carriages.
He also indicated that the fire at the scene is under control and being tackled by response teams.
As of 21h30, 167 personnel, supported by 57 vehicles, were present at the location, according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority’s website.
