The Ukrainian Embassy in Portugal expressed sorrow on social media over the death of a Ukrainian citizen in the Elevador da Glória accident, which resulted in 16 fatalities.

“The Embassy of Ukraine in Lisbon and the Ukrainian community in Portugal received the news of the tragic accident at the Elevador da Glória with profound sorrow. It resulted in numerous casualties. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by this terrible tragedy, as well as to the people of Portugal. In this time of deep mourning, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Ukraine stands in solidarity with the Portuguese Republic in this difficult ordeal,” the statement read.

Without disclosing names, the association of Ukrainians in Portugal, SPILKA, stated that the victim was originally from the city of Ternopil, born in 1971, and had been living in Portugal for several years, having moved there before the onset of the war in Ukraine.

However, according to SIC Notícias, the man was living in Lisbon “under the protection regime for war refugees.”
