AT THE MINUTE: Solemn session starts with a vote of condolences for the death of the Pope

The Portuguese Parliament marks the 51st anniversary of the April 25, 1974, revolution with the parliament dissolved and in observance of a national day of mourning. A traditional popular parade will be held in Lisbon in the afternoon. This day also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first free elections following the fall of the dictatorship, held for the Constituent Assembly.

The government, operating in caretaker mode, decided to postpone the festive activities initially planned for May 1, Labor Day, in light of the national mourning for the passing of Pope Francis.

The session will commence with the reading of a vote of condolence for the Pope’s death, followed by a minute of silence.
