Atlânticoline cancels Horta/Madalena/Velas trips due to Gabrielle

The company announced on its website that “due to adverse weather conditions for navigation, the scheduled trips on the Green Line (Horta/Madalena/Velas) for Friday afternoon are canceled.”

In its statement, Atlânticoline thanked passengers for their understanding, regretting “any inconvenience this cancellation may cause.”

The post-tropical storm Gabrielle has left eight people homeless and caused 103 incidents across various Azorean islands, without causing injuries, as announced today by the Regional Government.

According to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the storm was moving away from the Azores archipelago as of 8:30 a.m. local time (9:30 a.m. in Lisbon) today.

“At this moment, the extra tropical depression Gabrielle is already moving away from the archipelago,” stated meteorologist Elsa Vieira from the Azores Regional Delegation of the IPMA in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, during a situation update at 8:30 a.m. local time.

The meteorologist noted that “from now on, there will be a gradual improvement in weather conditions” in the Azores.

“Some gusts may still occur, especially on the [island] of Terceira and until midday in the Eastern group [São Miguel and Santa Maria], with winds reaching 100/110 kilometers per hour [km/h],” she added.

The tropical cyclone Gabrielle, which has been affecting the Azores since Thursday, has downgraded from a category 1 hurricane to a post-tropical depression.

A red warning—the most severe on a scale of three—was issued for the Central (Pico, Faial, Graciosa, Terceira, and São Jorge) and Western (Flores and Corvo) islands due to forecasts of precipitation, wind, and maritime agitation.

The Regional Government declared a state of alert until 6:00 p.m. on Friday for the Central and Western groups, prohibiting certain activities.

In these islands, non-urgent and essential public services, including schools, were also closed.
