“An attack of this nature, especially at a time when solutions for a ceasefire are being sought, should be condemned,” stated José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who has exchanged messages with his Ukrainian counterpart.
The President of the Assembly of the Republic expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of the Russian attack and expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people. This message will be published on the parliament’s website.
“The Russian attack in the center of the city of Sumy, which caused more than 30 deaths and numerous injuries, is yet another expression of the aggressor’s total disregard for humanitarian law,” Aguiar-Branco criticized.
The Prime Minister had already described these attacks as intolerable.
“The Russian attacks on the city of Sumy are intolerable. All solidarity with the victims and President Zelensky. Russia continues in blatant violation of international law. Portugal stands with Ukraine and supports the ceasefire proposed by the USA,” wrote Luis Montenegro on social media platform X.
A Russian missile attack carried out this morning in the center of Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, killed at least 31 people, including two children, and injured over 80, according to a report published by Ukrainian emergency services.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a “strong response from the world” to the attack on Sumy in a post on the social network Telegram.
“We need a strong response from the world. America, Europe, everyone who wants this war and these deaths to end. Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging this war on,” emphasized the Ukrainian head of state.
“Enemy missiles hit an ordinary street in the city, normal life: houses, schools, cars on the road…And this on a day when people go to church, Palm Sunday,” Zelensky described, cited by the EFE agency.
