A man attempted to run over a police officer from the Public Security Police (PSP) this Saturday afternoon at approximately 5:30 PM during the police operation at the sports event between Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Sporting Clube de Portugal.
In a preliminary statement, the PSP reported that at the junction of Alameda das Linhas da Torre with Rua António Stromp, there was an attempt to run over a PSP officer.
The suspect, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested for resisting and coercing an officer.
“Various pyrotechnic items were found in the vehicle and in the possession of the suspect, which were seized. After formalizing his arrest, this individual will be taken to the COMETLIS detention center for presentation to the competent Judicial Authority and the application of possible coercive measures,” the statement read.
The PSP further disclosed that during the police operation, three individuals were intercepted and identified for the possession/handling of pyrotechnic articles, and various artifacts of this nature were seized.
Authorities also informed that the road axes connecting Campo Grande, Amoreiras, and Restauradores to Praça Marquês de Pombal, as well as adjacent streets to this location, have been closed at this time “to isolate the entire area in preparation for potential celebrations.”
The accompanying of Sporting Clube de Portugal fans from Estádio José Alvalade to Estádio da Luz occurred “without incidents,” as did the escorting of both teams to the stadium.
