A 58-year-old man was arrested on October 29 after assaulting and attempting to strangle his wife twice in Leiria. When officers from the Public Security Police (PSP) intervened, he confronted them.
The altercation was sparked by a disagreement, during which the 54-year-old victim managed to escape and seek refuge in the kitchen. There, “frightened and shaken,” she called for help from the authorities, as stated in a security force communiqué delivered to newsrooms this Friday.
The assailant reportedly “went to the garage, threateningly stating he was going to fetch an axe while hurling insults at his wife.”
“The man reacted aggressively upon the police’s arrival at the scene and, while the victim was recounting the events, tried to approach her with the intent to assault, but was prevented by the officers present. Seeing that he could not carry out his intentions, the suspect turned on the officers, attempting to physically assault them, at which point he was restrained and arrested,” the PSP noted in the same release.
Authorities also reported finding and seizing a large axe near the entrance to the residence.
The man was taken to the PSP facilities in Leiria, where he was held overnight. Yesterday, he was brought before the judiciary authority at the Judicial Court of Leiria and was remanded in custody.
The woman additionally claimed to have been a victim of domestic violence for about ten years and had previously filed a report with the competent authorities when they both resided in Figueira da Foz.
This action was carried out by the Leiria District Command of the PSP, through the Marrazes police station.
