A 51-year-old man was arrested by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) on charges of attempting to murder his 42-year-old wife on Friday night in front of their two young children, aged 6 and 11, in Olhão, Algarve.
The attacker reportedly used a “sharp cutting object” to assault the victim “for futile reasons.”
Due to the severity of her injuries, the woman received initial medical attention at the Local Health Unit of Algarve in Faro before being transferred to the Hospital of Santa Maria in Lisbon, according to the PJ’s statement.
Twelve hours after the incident, the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) in Olhão apprehended the man within the region.
The suspect is now under preventive detention.
The case is being overseen by the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Olhão.
