A 36-year-old man was arrested late Saturday afternoon in Póvoa de Lanhoso for shooting his three-year-old son during an argument with his wife.
The National Republican Guard (GNR) confirmed receiving a domestic violence alert at Caminho do Pinheiro, in the Garfe parish of Póvoa de Lanhoso, around 6:25 PM.
Since the injury involved a firearm, the case was transferred to the Judiciary Police (PJ), who are handling further investigations.
The child suffered a leg injury from the short-range shot. The man fired a second shot, also intending to hit his wife.
The second shot missed, and the woman managed to flee with her son to the GNR post in Póvoa de Lanhoso.
The child was injured after clutching his mother in panic, witnessing his father’s anger.
The shooter was arrested by the PJ at his home without resistance, in possession of a 6.35-millimeter caliber pistol and about ten bullets.
The child was treated and transported to Braga Central Hospital. Although still hospitalized, he is expected to be released in a few days as he is not in life-threatening condition.
