Attention, passengers: easyJet will maintain cabin baggage size

EasyJet clarified on Tuesday that it will continue to allow its passengers to carry a bag measuring 45 x 36 x 20 cm, even after Airlines for Europe (A4E) standardized last week the size of free hand luggage that is usually placed under the front seat to 40 × 30 × 15 cm.

“We welcome the standardization of the guaranteed size for the ‘personal item’ of cabin baggage, which has been agreed among European airlines. Although easyJet already has a more generous size, which will be maintained, we believe this step will clarify for consumers the minimum baggage size they can carry when traveling with any airline member of the association,” stated a clarification sent to Notícias ao Minuto.

Despite the A4E decision, of which easyJet is a part, the airline assures that its passengers “can continue to carry on board one cabin bag per person for free, with a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (handles and wheels included) and a maximum weight of 15 kg,” according to the same note released.

The A4E measure follows a decision on June 5 by the European Union (EU) Transport Ministers regarding passenger rights of air carriers.

Airlines are also required to provide clear and accessible information about the authorized object’s dimensions, including the maximum dimensions and weight of the baggage they can carry in the cabin.

The European decision results from a ruling by the Court of Justice of the EU, which decreed that the transport of hand luggage cannot be subject to an additional charge, provided it meets reasonable requirements in terms of weight and dimensions and complies with applicable security requirements.

On Monday, DECO PROTeste explained that the “free bag that can be carried on board in the cabin, under the front seat (called ‘personal item’), will have a uniform size across several airlines”, noting that the “solution results from an agreement among member airlines of the Airlines for Europe association, which includes airlines like TAP, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, or EasyJet”.

Thus, “with this agreement, the maximum dimensions of the personal item will be 40x30x15 cm in all airlines that are part of Airlines for Europe”, and the “measure should come into effect by the end of this summer“.

However, it is noted that, “even so, some of the airlines included in this agreement will continue to allow larger personal items at boarding“, such as easyJet, which decided to maintain the slightly larger size.
