Auchan Retail Portugal announced today that it has invested 10 million euros this year in improving working conditions and wages for its employees, highlighting that the average salary in its warehouses is 1,275 euros.
Employees at Auchan’s warehouses in Vialonga, Torres Novas, and Valongo are on strike today, demanding a minimum wage increase of 15%.
“Similar to the year 2024, Auchan invested 10 million euros in 2025 to revise wage conditions, ensuring that the minimum entry-level salary at the company is 25 euros above the national minimum wage,” stated an official source from Auchan Retail Portugal.
According to the company, the current entry salary is 895 euros, and the average remuneration for warehouse employees is 1,275 euros, along with “a range of benefits, such as shopping discounts and a health insurance plan covering the entire family.”
Auchan also emphasized that all employees are shareholders in the company and last year distributed 4.6 million euros of its profits to them.
Since 2013, Auchan has distributed more than 140 million euros of its profits among employee shareholders.
The workers are demanding a wage increase of at least 15%, with a minimum of 150 euros, that the entry salary in the company be set at 1,000 euros, retroactive to January, and a meal allowance of 10 euros per day.
Additionally, they are calling for the enhancement of career paths, provision of enough and appropriate uniforms, and improvement of working conditions in frozen goods areas.
Catarina Fachadas from the Union of Commerce, Office, and Service Workers of Portugal (CESP) stated that each of these warehouses has between 200 and 250 workers and regretted that the company has not yet responded to the demands.
Auchan also operates a warehouse in Vila Nova da Rainha, with logistics managed by DHL.
Logistics in the striking warehouses are handled by Auchan employees, but outsourcing services are also utilized.
