“With this new operation, the Azores are increasingly connected to Europe, enhancing the balanced and sustainable growth of tourism on the archipelago, in line with the principles of environmental preservation and the enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage of the destination,” states Visit Azores in a communiqué sent today to Lusa.
The announcement reveals that Austrian Airlines will launch a new direct route between Vienna and Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, Azores, starting June 30, 2026, with operations continuing until September 8, 2026.
These flights will be operated once a week, linking Ponta Delgada in the Azores to the heart of Europe.
The investment by Austrian Airlines stems from the company’s commitment to diversifying its offerings and confirms growing international interest in the Azores.
“This new connection is a significant milestone in the connectivity between Austria and the Azores, revealing that we are an increasingly sought-after destination by this market, with more than 12,000 visitors in 2024, mainly tourists seeking nature destinations and sustainable experiences,” the communiqué reads.
The president of Visit Azores, Luís Capdeville, mentioned in the communiqué, considers that “the arrival of Austrian Airlines in the Azores is more than a new route, it is an invitation to discovery.”
“We are opening doors for travelers who value authenticity, nature, and sustainability. This connection strengthens our mission to position the Azores as a reference destination in Europe,” concluded the official.
