The Liberal Initiative (IL) party has announced that it approved a new batch of municipal election candidacies during today’s National Council meeting, ahead of the weekend election of Mariana Leitão as the new president. This adds to the 30 candidacies already endorsed in the June 15 meeting of the same council.
With these new endorsements, IL is set to compete in 74 municipalities in the October 12 elections.
Today, the party approved 44 new candidacies, with 30 fielding independent lists in the municipalities of Alcobaça, Alcochete, Amadora, Angra do Heroísmo, Arcos de Valdevez, Aveiro, Barcelos, Barreiro, Batalha, Braga, Bragança, Cantanhede, Grândola, Guimarães, Loures, Mafra, Maia, Matosinhos, Montemor-o-Velho, Odivelas, Paços de Ferreira, Paredes, Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Seixal, Trofa, Valongo, Vila do Conde, Vila Velha de Ródão, and Viseu.
In coalition, IL will participate in 14 new lists:
These will include Albergaria-a-Velha (PSD/IL), Alenquer (PSD/CDS/IL/NC/MPT/PPM), Arouca (PSD/CDS/PPM/IL), Beja (PSD/CDS/IL), Chaves (PSD/CDS/IL), Coimbra (PSD/CDS-PP/IL/NC/PPM/V/MPT), Faro (PSD/IL/CDS/PAN/MPT), Gondomar (PSD/IL), Lousada (PSD/CDS/IL), Sintra (PSD/IL), Soure (PSD/CDS/IL), Tábua (PSD/CDS/IL), Vila Franca de Xira (PSD/IL), and Vila Nova de Gaia (PSD/CDS/IL).
On June 15, IL decided to form a coalition for the upcoming Porto City Hall elections, supporting PSD candidate and former minister Pedro Duarte.
At that National Council meeting, the liberals had already determined 30 municipal candidacies, 17 of which were independent lists and the rest in coalition.
