One person was rescued with minor injuries and the search continues to find another missing person, 26, who was swept away by the current.
A 26-year-old man has been missing since late this afternoon, April 13, in the sea off Praia da Vieira, and the authorities are continuing their search, according to a source from Leiria’s Civil Protection and the National Maritime Authority.
The alert went out at 7.26pm, when two people were identified as being in difficulty at sea.
The rescue operation involved, at sea, the Nazaré Life Saving Stations and a water scooter from the Vieira de Leiria Volunteer Fire Brigade and, on land, elements from the Nazaré Maritime Police Local Command, as well as the Vieira de Leiria Volunteer Fire Brigade.
One of the firefighters involved in the work was also taken to the hospital, also with minor injuries.
The search for the missing man is continuing at the scene, involving 34 people, 11 vehicles and an aerial vehicle from the Vieira de Leiria Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Nazaré Captaincy, INEM, GNR and the Portuguese Air Force.
According to the National Maritime Authority, the man was swept away by “a strong current that was felt this afternoon, April 13, at Vieira beach”.
The same institution guarantees that the search operations, coordinated by the Port Captain and Local Commander of the Nazaré Maritime Police, “will continue until the end of the day”.

Search operations resumed at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Search and rescue operations for a 26-year-old man who disappeared yesterday evening in the sea off Praia da Vieira resumed at 7am today.
At the scene are 25 personnel and 12 vehicles from the Vieira de Leiria Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Nazaré Captaincy and the GNR, as well as a helicopter from the Portuguese Air Force, said the Leiria Sub-regional Protection and Relief Command.
As of 10.30am, the sub-regional command said, there had still been no developments that had made it possible to find the missing person.
