Autumn will begin on Monday, September 22, bringing with it a “significant drop in temperature across the territory,” according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). The organization indicated that for most of the country, the week from September 21 to 28 will be characterized by “dry weather.”
This temperature drop, expected to range from 5 to 8 °C in inland regions, is attributed to the influence of northern airflow and the movement of relatively cold air into the territory at the start of the week, the institute detailed in a statement released on Friday.
Specifically, the IPMA noted that, north of the Montejunto-Estrela system, maximum temperatures are expected to be between 20 and 26 °C, while to the south they will range from 25 to 30 ºC.
Minimum temperatures are also expected to decrease, with values anticipated between 10 and 15 ºC. In high-altitude areas, these are expected to fall below 7 ºC.
The organization also mentioned that “the coming week will be dry, with precipitation levels much below what is normal for this time of year.”
Rainfall is anticipated only towards the end of the week, with it being “more likely north of the Montejunto-Estrela system.”
