Available to “serve the country,” Carneiro requests an audience with Montenegro

“Today’s meeting with the President of the Republic was an institutional dialogue I intend to extend to other sovereign bodies, namely the president of the Assembly of the Republic and senior court officials,” stated José Luís Carneiro following a one-hour and 15-minute meeting at the Belém Palace.

In discussions with reporters shortly after being elected Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Carneiro shared his intentions to request meetings with José Pedro Aguiar-Branco and the presidents of the higher courts, followed by proposing a meeting with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.

“This dialogue was crucial to demonstrate the Socialist Party’s commitment to serving our country, particularly focusing on strategic state functions, including our European and Atlantic responsibilities,” he noted.

Carneiro expressed to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa the PS’s willingness “to contribute to improving the internal security system and the justice system” and to establish a dialogue aimed at enhancing democratic life.

“I also conveyed our vital priorities for collective development, addressing concrete issues in people’s lives, such as economic growth and improving wages and family incomes, housing, and health,” he mentioned.

The new PS Secretary-General also expressed a desire to aid in strengthening European defense capabilities to foster national economic development.

“I am referring to creating a national strategic plan that enhances the military industrial dimension, mobilizing the state’s capabilities, our national scientific system, and small and medium-sized enterprises to ensure that defense investments do not compromise social functions or territorial and economic cohesion,” he stated.
