The Aveiro municipality wants to provide more social housing, affordable housing and promote urban regeneration.

The Aveiro municipality has approved the Municipal Housing Development Program, which will help to increase the supply of housing in various ways. The idea is to provide more social housing, affordable housing and also to promote the development of university residences according to the needs of the municipality of Aveiro.

The new Municipal Housing Development Program was approved last Thursday, April 4, by the Aveiro Municipal Executive. The aim is to “respond to the tensions caused by the strong pressure of demand for housing in relation to supply, in multiple types of accommodation (…), the existence of high prices in the purchase and rental of housing (…), a situation that requires intervention using different instruments”, reads a statement published by the Aveiro Region intermunicipal community.

Specifically, this program will prioritize the areas of social housing, affordable housing, support for rental housing, university residences and investment support.

Thus, Aveiro City Council’s housing strategy involves achieving 10 objectives, such as:

  • Put vacant and dilapidated houses back on the rental market;Promote housing maintenance;
  • Rehabilitating existing buildings;
  • Create solutions for degraded neighborhoods and buildings that are illegal and/or socially marginalized;
  • Providing social housing for isolated and needy people who are at social risk or homeless:
  • Create answers to the needs of University Residences and Tourist Accommodation;
  • Planning the development of housing expansion areas, promoting greater access to affordable housing;
  • Create green spaces and sports and recreational facilities;

In addition, the municipality of Aveiro wants to increase “the bonds of human relations through intangible initiatives of neighborhood involvement and participation in the community, namely in residential areas markedly lacking in this type of experience, promoting settlement and population rejuvenation,” the document also states.
