Avian flu detected on the island of Madeira

The avian influenza has been detected in a yellow-legged gull in the municipality of Funchal, Madeira archipelago, announced the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV).

The outbreak was identified on Monday in a wild bird in the parish of Sé, according to data released by the DGAV.

This marks the 28th outbreak of avian influenza virus infection confirmed this year.

Avian influenza had previously been detected in Benavente, Cascais, and Aveiro.

The transmission of the virus to humans is rare, with sporadic cases reported worldwide. However, when it occurs, the infection can result in a severe clinical condition.

The DGAV has been urging all bird owners to comply with biosecurity measures and good production practices to prevent contact between domestic and wild birds.

Any suspicion of avian influenza infection should be reported to the DGAV.

DGAV is a central service of the direct state administration, with administrative autonomy.
