Amid soaring temperatures and numerous wildfires nationwide, the AGIF aims to not only raise awareness about risky behaviors in rural areas but also to “promote the adoption of self-protection measures and respect for the rules in force,” according to a statement to the press.
The campaign coincides with a significant increase in the arrival of emigrants via land and air. Proximity actions will be conducted by the GNR, and at entry points—Vilar Formoso border and the airports in Lisbon, Porto, and Faro—emigrants “will be welcomed with visual warning messages and informative materials.”
The AGIF emphasizes the importance of avoiding the use of fire on days of very high or maximum risk, not discarding cigarette butts, not using machinery in rural areas, and refraining from setting fires, launching rockets, or fireworks. “It is essential that each of us minimizes risky behaviors,” states the communiqué.
In addition to alerting Portuguese citizens returning for the holiday period, this initiative also seeks to “raise awareness among tourists visiting Portugal about the importance of knowing self-protection measures, both individual and collective, during tourism and leisure activities.”
