Filipe Tavares, responsible for the association that organizes the event – the Regional Association for the Promotion and Development of Tourism, Environment, Culture and Health (ARTAC), explained to Lusa that the motivation that was at the genesis of the festival is musical, “but with the course of its first edition [in 2015] there was a huge desire to change the paradigm, introducing measures to reduce environmental impact”.

The businessman and environmentalist said that it was intended “to make the festival a kind of beacon for other events, and not only”, and the public that joins the initiative is “subjected to a set of practices, with immediate effect, and that leads it to verify that its contribution has a positive effect” in environmental terms, proposing, in parallel, an ecological program.

In the chapter of sustainability there is a concern to fulfill three pillars: economic, social and environmental, and in the first pillar “more than 80% of the investment made by the festival is directed to local professionals and companies based in the Azores”, according to the promoter of the event.

Filipe Tavares pointed out that, in social sustainability, half of the activities developed are free, especially in the programming designed for Praia do Porto Formoso, and young people from the local community are integrated into the organization of the festival, through a financial value that is attributed to them.

For the first time, the festival will send the biodegradable waste produced at the event to the Eco Park of São Miguel Island.

For four days, around 60 regional, national and international artists take to the festival’s three stages.

Together “they contribute to the definition of the musical identity of the event that exudes world music, soul, jazz, dub, funk and other styles of black music”, and the musical direction results from the partnership between Filipe Tavares, founder and director of the Festival, and Adrian Sherwood, host of the event.

In 2023, the festival organization will implement the same accessibility model as in previous editions, with the provision of peripheral parking lots and a reinforced shuttle service with more vehicles and extended hours, which will connect to the beach and the Moinhos park.

The musical program consists of Selma Uamusse, The Legendary Tigerman, Club Makumba, Arp Frique, Mirror People, Filipe Karlsson, Duo Atlântico & Isa B. and Manel The Island Men & Friends.

Inetgra also several DJs such as Las Mákinas, Zelecta, Piu Piu, Esses Céus, Isilda Sanches, Mesquita & Laura, Milhafre, Nex, Galopim + Quaresma/Antena 1, Novo Major, Adrian Sherwood and Pedro Tenreiro.

The so-called ‘ecotalks’, which are debate panels around socio-environmental issues, with the participation of policy makers, representatives of associations, activists and experts, an exhibition of electric vehicles, as well as the ‘ecomarket’, a fair of ‘ecodesign’ and natural products, along with the outdoor cinema, are already annual marks of the festival, which has an attendance limitation.
