The municipality of Lagoa reported that the storm affected the village of Água de Pau, causing floods in homes and public streets, and overflowing streams that washed vehicles away.
The local government highlighted the flooding of a residence, which was left uninhabitable. However, there was no need for relocation as the residents stayed with relatives.
“Due to the force of the waters overflowing from the stream located on Rua da Ribeira Seca, known as Ribeira de Santiago, four vehicles were swept into the stream,” it added.
The municipality noted that “in total, about fifteen light vehicles sustained damages” and “despite significant material damage, there are no reports of casualties.”
Regarding the damages, it was stated that the Câmara Municipal de Lagoa has already initiated procedures under the Municipal Civil Protection Plan to activate the Regional Government of the Azores’ Climate Emergency Fund, in close collaboration with the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action.
Frederico Sousa, the President of the Câmara Municipal de Lagoa, is on-site with Vanessa Silva, President of the Junta de Freguesia de Água de Pau, along with members of the Municipal Civil Protection Service and technicians from the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action. They are conducting a thorough analysis and inspection of the Ribeira do Santiago area to identify possible causes of the situation, as debris, particularly wooden logs, were found, which are being removed by the Secretariat of the Environment and Municipal Council teams.
The Municipality of Lagoa’s Civil Protection Plan was immediately activated on Saturday.
The Câmara Municipal, supported by the Junta de Freguesia of the village of Água de Pau, mobilized transportation means and municipal human resources for cleaning and clearing roads and stream conduits, as well as providing assistance to those affected by the floods.
“The cleaning and clearing of the roads were completed after eight continuous hours of work,” it emphasized.
