Azores. President of ALRAA expresses solidarity with the victims of the Elevador da Glória accident.

“The Azorean parliament expresses its deep solidarity in the face of this tragedy, affecting not only the city of Lisbon but the entire country, wishing a swift and full recovery to the injured,” stated Luís Garcia in a note released by the presidency of ALRAA.

In this “moment of mourning and consternation,” the president of the Regional Legislative Assembly extends, on behalf of the Azorean parliament, “the deepest condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to those who were directly or indirectly affected by this tragedy.”

The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday at 18:04, resulting in at least 17 deaths and 21 injuries.

Among the 17 fatalities, 15 were confirmed at the accident site, and two succumbed to their injuries in hospitals.

The government declared a national day of mourning today, while the Lisbon City Council decided to observe three days of municipal mourning.

The Glória funicular connects Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, covering a distance of approximately 265 meters, and is highly popular among tourists.
