Bad weather: All flights canceled today at Madeira Airport

The ANA – Madeira Airports page announces that all scheduled arrivals and departures are canceled through the end of the day, including the first TAP flight to Lisbon at 1:00 AM on Sunday.

This situation affects many thousands of passengers who have no alternative to leave the island.

The orange warnings issued by IPMA for maritime agitation and heavy rainfall will downgrade to yellow after midnight on Sunday.

In the latest report, the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service states that, with the island affected by depression Emília, 273 incidents had been recorded by 4:00 PM, the most significant being the collapse of a house roof in the Santa Cruz municipality, necessitating the relocation of one person.

This service mentions that 164 of these incidents were tree falls, 24 construction element collapses, and 34 power grid failures, among other situations involving 599 operatives and 284 technical means.

Furthermore, Funchal was the municipality with the highest number of interventions.

The Funchal captaincy has also extended warnings for maritime agitation and strong winds for the Madeira archipelago until 6:00 PM on Sunday, with the north coast, mountainous areas, and Porto Santo under orange warning due to severe weather.

The regional maritime authority, based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), indicates that the wind will blow “strong to very strong, gradually decreasing to fresh to very fresh starting at night.”

In terms of wave activity, the north coast is expected to experience waves between five to seven meters, decreasing to approximately three to 3.5 meters, with similar heights on the southern part.

The captaincy has canceled the poor visibility warning, stating that it will be “good to moderate, occasionally poor until the late morning.”

The captaincy insists on recommendations to the entire maritime community and general population to take precautions when preparing for sea-going activities, whether at sea or in coastal areas. This includes strengthening moorings, ensuring vessel surveillance, avoiding areas exposed to sea agitation, and not engaging in recreational fishing.
