Bad weather ’causes’ 50 incidents in the Algarve, but leaves no injuries.

Intense rainfall resulted in significant flooding in homes, shops, and garages in the Algarve, according to the regional civil protection authority. Measures are currently being taken to drain affected areas.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., aligning with high tide, during which the Faro Airport weather station documented 30.8 millimeters of precipitation, the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) noted.

Officials stated that conditions have now “calmed down,” with the district of Faro gradually returning to normal. The orange weather warning issued for heavy rainfall, effective from 10 a.m., is expected to conclude by noon.

Historically vulnerable areas, particularly old town centers, were most impacted due to water accumulation during intense rain episodes.

In response, municipal command posts have been established in Vila Real de Santo António and Faro to oversee and coordinate operations, with resources being deployed from other municipalities to bolster support.

The east Algarve city of Tavira also experienced some flooding, it was noted.
