The Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) announced that a weather alert has been issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, forecasting heavy rain during the afternoon, particularly on the southern slope and highlands of Madeira Island.
Winds are expected to be light to moderate (up to 30 km/h), increasing to moderate to strong (30 to 45 km/h) in highland areas and temporarily at the eastern and western extremes of the island during the day.
The Regional Civil Protection Service warns of the potential for falling branches or trees and the movement of loose objects onto roadways due to strong wind episodes, which can pose risks to vehicles and pedestrians.
There could also be the formation of water sheets, creating slippery surfaces, and urban flooding is anticipated.
The SRPC advises several preventive measures, including ensuring that drainage systems are unobstructed and removing debris and other objects that may create obstacles or be washed away. Additionally, loose structures such as scaffolding, billboards, and suspended structures should be properly secured.
Civil Protection urges “special caution” when traveling and staying near wooded areas and buildings in poor condition, due to the risk of landslides, especially in mountainous and coastal regions.
