Bad weather: Lisbon’s firefighters received about 50 requests in 3 hours

According to a regiment source, between 4:40 AM and 7:45 AM, approximately 50 calls were received, mostly pertaining to floods in private spaces or on public roads.

Additionally, there were reports of four fallen trees and three collapsed structures in Lisbon.

Continental Portugal is currently affected by a cold front with moderate to strong activity, causing rain, thunderstorms, and wind, as reported by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The precipitation expected today, “at times intense and accompanied by thunderstorms,” especially until the late morning, prompted the IPMA to issue an orange alert (the second most severe) for rain and a yellow alert for thunderstorms. These alerts are set to expire at 9:00 AM and, in some districts, at 12:00 PM.

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) recorded 150 incidents between midnight and 7:00 AM today related to heavy rain and wind.

Of the 150 incidents, 91 were floods, 42 involved fallen trees, and the rest were collapses of structures and minor landslides, mainly in the Lisbon sub-region.

According to civil protection, “in the Lisbon sub-region, 65 incidents were recorded, 18 in Setúbal, 12 in the West, with the remaining scattered throughout other mainland regions.”

The IPMA also forecasts an increase in maritime agitation on the west coast, with waves from the west quadrant reaching four to five meters, potentially reaching five to six meters between tonight and Thursday morning.

An orange warning for maritime agitation has been issued for this period.
