Bad weather. Losses of 5.6 million euros in agriculture in LVT

The vice-president of CCDRLVT overseeing Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, José Bernardo Nunes, announced today that 216 claims for damages were submitted through an online platform, which remained open until March 14.

Out of the total claims, 143 relate to damages in investments such as infrastructure, equipment, or uninsured crops, with total losses amounting to €5.6 million.

“The majority of claims concern strawberry production micro-tunnels and horticultural greenhouses in the Oeste region, although some are from Ribatejo,” he noted.

These damages may qualify for production potential restoration support announced by the Ministry of Agriculture.

To qualify, the loss for each operation must exceed 30%, he noted.

Eighty-eight submissions were deemed ineligible for the announced support, either for not meeting the 30% threshold or because they involve losses in annual crop production, which should be insured.

“We are referring to potato, carrot, cabbage, onion, almond, and rice crops, as well as affected forests and meadows,” he detailed.

An additional 12 submissions were excluded due to insufficient data.

Agriculture Minister José Manuel Fernandes announced support both for restoring productive capacity and for income assistance for farms with losses exceeding 30% due to adverse weather on March 20.

Support will cover 100% for farmers with losses up to €5,000, 85% for losses between €5,000 and €50,000, and 50% for losses between €50,000 and €400,000.

Income support amounts to €42,000 per beneficiary.

The passage of depression Martinho, marked by heavy rain, wind, and strong sea disturbances, led to thousands of incidents across Portugal, primarily involving falling trees and structures, while orange weather warnings—the second most severe level—were in effect.
