“Tireless defender of press freedom, a crucial builder of our democracy. Portugal is poorer without him,” wrote former presidential candidate and ex-socialist MEP Ana Gomes on the social network X.
Basílio Horta, former vice-president of the CDS and outgoing president of Sintra Municipality (elected on the PS lists), remarked on Facebook that with the death of Balsemão, “a decisive personality of an entire generation of politicians disappears.”
“He was a man of principles, extremely delicate, and of enormous personal and political quality. Today I lost another friend with whom I collaborated very closely in his governments. We all become poorer, and some, very few, increasingly alone,” emphasized Basílio Horta.
