A 60-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of committing four aggravated robberies at bank branches in the city of Barcelos.
The robberies were executed by a duo, with the other suspect having been questioned by authorities on June 17.
The pair targeted branches with low customer traffic, entering with partially concealed faces.
In one of the initial robberies, the suspects used firearms to threaten staff, who then handed over all available cash, allowing the robbers to escape with thousands of euros.
Subsequent attempts were thwarted by security systems, preventing them from acquiring any funds, the PJ stated in a communication to Notícias ao Minuto’s newsroom.
The detainee had a criminal record and had previously been convicted for leading a gang that committed five bank robberies.
The suspect has been brought before the competent judicial authority and has been remanded in custody pending trial.
