Luís Montenegro spoke during a luncheon with all the mayors of the Lisbon district, with the only absentees being the independents Isaltino Morais (Oeiras) and Sérgio Galvão (Torres Vedras), focusing mainly on housing and security issues in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
“These candidates we have here are not those who just stand by and watch the reemergence of shantytowns. There’s no problem in referring to it as it is: shantytowns and slums,” he stated.
The prime minister also highlighted that this type of housing had been “eradicated by a government with the same ideological inspiration,” referring to the administrations led by Cavaco Silva.
“They slowly returned, here and there, on this bank and the other side, resurfacing notably – it must also be said – in municipalities governed by the Socialist Party and the Communist Party. It’s very curious to observe that this new movement of shantytowns and slums resurfacing happened in municipalities managed by the Socialist and Communist Parties,” he accused.
