Barreiro company receives funding for 40 electric buses

During the Barreiro city council meeting held on Wednesday, councilor Maria João Regalo, from the management board of the municipally-run transport company, announced the approval of funding under the PPR scheme amounting to 12 million euros for the acquisition of electric buses.

The councilor explained that the total investment would be 16 million euros to purchase 40 electric buses with four different types, aimed at accommodating the increased demand.

“This is news that makes us very happy. Now we move to the public tender phase, and in a few months, we will have the beautiful number of 100 buses running in Barreiro,” she stated.

The Transport Colectivos do Barreiro is a municipal company providing collective road passenger transport, established in 1957.

Today, the Government announced the signing of contracts for the acquisition of 389 new electric buses, funded through the reprogramming of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which are expected to operate in more than 70 municipalities on the mainland by 2026.

According to the Government, the purchase of these vehicles, facilitated through the Environmental Fund and reprogrammed PRR funds, aims to “enhance the fleet of zero-emission buses and expand the network of charging and refueling infrastructure nationwide.”

The 389 vehicles join another 413, whose tender was launched last year, all of which receive 100% funding.

The total planned investment for more than 800 vehicles is nearly 211 million euros from the PRR, according to the Ministry of Environment.

The 398 buses contracted today will receive 120.9 million euros from the PRR, in addition to the 90 million euros reprogrammed for the 413 vehicles announced in 2024.

The more than 800 zero-emission buses are intended for transport companies, municipalities, and municipal entities throughout the mainland, representing a total investment of approximately 54.5 million euros in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, 21.5 million euros in Porto, and 145 million euros across the rest of the mainland.
