The municipality led by Socialist Frederico Rosa announced plans to bolster the fleet operated by the Serviços Municipalizados de Transportes Colectivos do Barreiro (SMTCB). A statement from the Barreiro City Council informs that the acquisition of these first eight vehicles is part of a larger procurement plan for a total of 40 vehicles, representing an investment of 16 million euros. This initiative is funded through the approved application to the Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR).
Currently, Barreiro’s fleet comprises 60 natural gas buses, which will be augmented by 40 electric ones. According to Frederico Rosa, “this step is fundamental to continue the renewal and electrification of the SMTCB fleet.” The aim is to promote the use of more efficient, environmentally friendly public transportation while modernizing the equipment.
Rosa further notes that the introduction of new equipment will enable an increased frequency of collective transportation, better serving the municipality’s population and reaching a broader user base. The municipal company Transportes Coletivos do Barreiro has been operating in the city since February 24, 1957.
