A 55-year-old man was arrested in the parish of Águas Livres, Amadora, on suspicion of domestic violence, as reported by the Public Security Police (PSP) in a statement.
According to the police, the man was detained on October 8 after the PSP was called to the scene due to “family disagreements.”
Upon arrival, officers found “several people requesting assistance,” as a man had “barricaded” himself with his girlfriend in a house, threatening to kill her.
The PSP confirmed that from inside the residence, specifically the bathroom, the victim was screaming for help, “clearly in panic,” afraid that her boyfriend might kill her.
Immediately, the officers engaged in “negotiation” with the suspect. It was then understood that he “was not in his normal state of health.” The man admitted to being in withdrawal due to “lack of drug consumption.”
Fearing he might be armed and endanger the victim’s life, the PSP performed a “tactical entry” into the house where the suspect was located and intercepted him as he was performing a “chokehold” on the victim.
To stop the assault on the woman, the PSP used a taser to subdue the attacker.
The man, who had previous indictments for other domestic violence crimes, was arrested and brought to a preliminary judicial hearing. He was issued the restraining order to stay away from the victim, prohibited from using knives, and required to attend drug dependency treatment.
