Basílio Horta says that the new hospital in Sintra will serve everyone.

The new hospital unit is established to “serve everyone, regardless of their condition or status,” stated Basílio Horta during the inauguration of the hospital, part of the Amadora-Sintra Local Health Unit, which will relieve pressure from Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca (HFF).

The mayor highlighted the population growth in the municipality of Sintra, in Lisbon district, emphasizing the need for a thorough review of the health system, as the HFF was already serving more than 500,000 users.

Basílio Horta mentioned that the project cost the municipality approximately 70 million euros.

“The construction was entirely self-funded over five years. We received no funds from Europe or the central state. This should fill us with pride, especially our taxpayers who paid for it, as they diverted their money to invest in their health, which was a remarkably important investment,” he emphasized.

The mayor also noted that Sintra’s new hospital “is the only [hospital] built in recent years” in the country.

“Of all those included in the budget, none were built, and some didn’t even make it past planning. The only one that went from planning to construction was not in the budget,” he remarked.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Health Minister Ana Paula Martins, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and former socialist Health Ministers Adalberto Campos Fernandes, António Correia de Campos, and Maria de Belém Roseira.

The new hospital will support the Amadora-Sintra Hospital, one of the largest in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, and will handle non-urgent cases in the emergency service.

Located in Casal da Cavaleira, Algueirão-Mem Martins, the new Hospital of Sintra began construction four years ago and spans a covered area of 10,500 square meters with 49,000 square meters uncovered.

It represents an investment of around 81 million euros, including construction and equipment acquisition, and will benefit 550,000 users.

The Hospital of Sintra offers outpatient services, external consultations and examinations, a mental health unit, physical rehabilitation medicine, a collection center, and complementary diagnostic and therapeutic means. It has an outpatient surgery unit with a surgery block and recovery room.

It also features a basic emergency service to manage approximately 60,000 emergencies, about half of those attended at the Amadora-Sintra Hospital, 60 inpatient beds, a pharmacy, a sterilization unit, and space for education and training.
