Beira Baixa Line: Traffic is expected to resume on Friday morning

A train line has been closed since Wednesday night following a collision between an Intercidades train and a truck at the Alpedrinha level crossing in Fundão, Castelo Branco district.

Repair work on the line near the Alpedrinha halt is ongoing, as reported by an IP source.

The track and signaling repairs are nearly complete. However, given the “extensive damage” observed, work on the overhead line will continue for several more hours, the source noted.

“We estimate that by tonight, the work will be complete, aiming to restore circulation on this section by early morning,” it was specified.

At least four people sustained minor injuries, and six were assisted following the collision. The accident occurred at 20:00 on Wednesday.

The Intercidades train, which left Guarda for Lisbon, was carrying 118 passengers, according to CP – Comboios de Portugal.

The train collided with a heavy vehicle at the Alpedrinha level crossing, and following the crash, the vehicle caught fire, spreading to one of the train carriages.

The Sub-regional Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela reported at 22:00 that the fire was already under control.
