The campaign, organized by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Public Security Police (PSP), includes awareness and enforcement actions, focusing particularly on roads and access points with heavy traffic flow.
In a statement, the ANSR emphasizes that in the event of a collision, a vehicle stops in a fraction of a second, but occupants not wearing seat belts continue moving forward at the same speed the vehicle was traveling.
The organization explains that in a head-on collision at 50 kilometers per hour, a 70-kilogram driver without a seat belt experiences an impact equivalent to a fall from a third floor.
Wearing a helmet that is approved, securely fastened, and adjusted can reduce the risk of death in an accident by 40%, it adds.
The ANSR also notes that the correct use of a child seat, approved and adapted to the child’s weight, reduces the risk of severe injury by 60%. It highlights that for children under four, using a rear-facing child seat combined with a seat belt reduces the risk of serious injury or death by up to 90%.
The enforcement actions will take place from September 9 to 15 in the municipalities of Vila do Conde, Gondomar, Santa Maria da Feira, Coimbra, and Almada.
