
As storm depression Cláudia swept through the country, it left a trail of devastation. Beyond the material damage, which remains under assessment, this meteorological phenomenon resulted in even more tragic consequences: the loss of three lives.
An elderly couple, both over 80, lost their lives on Thursday after their home was inundated due to torrential overnight rains in Pinhal de General, Fernão Ferro.
In Albufeira, Algarve, an extreme wind event akin to a tornado claimed the life of an 85-year-old British woman.
From midnight until 6 p.m. on Saturday, mainland Portugal recorded 815 incidents linked to the severe weather — chiefly floods in the Porto Metropolitan Area, followed by the Algarve region, according to official sources from Civil Protection.
After several days on orange alert due to the progression of storm depression Cláudia, the inclement weather in mainland Portugal is beginning to subside. However, forecasts still call for intermittent heavy rainfall, hail, thunderstorms on the western coast, and strong winds in coastal and highland areas.
Sea turbulence will also persist throughout today.
