Bimi wants to increase production in Portugal by 20% in the next campaign.

A Bimi, a company that produces the broccoli variety of the same name, plans to increase its production in Portugal by 20%. Currently, Bimi’s farming area in the country covers approximately 350 hectares.

“In the next agricultural campaign, we estimate a 20% increase in Bimi production in Portugal,” stated the company in a statement.

Bimi’s production area is approximately 350 hectares, with 50 hectares allocated to the national market.

The remaining production is intended for export, specifically to the United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, and Germany.

The area dedicated to Portugal will rise to at least 65 hectares in the upcoming campaign.

Bimi is a long-stemmed broccoli variety, sweeter than others and with a hint of nuts.

In Portugal, Bimi is cultivated in the western and southwestern Alentejo regions.

In 2024, the amount of Bimi sold in Portugal increased by 25%, the highest growth in the last three years, reaching nearly 472,000 kilograms.

“Portugal is a success story in Bimi consumption, with significant sales growth in all supermarket chains. We believe there is still room to grow production as well. Currently, about 90% of Bimi consumed in Portugal is produced locally,” said Alberto Alapont, Bimi’s Food Chain Manager for Spain, Portugal, and Italy, as quoted in a statement.

In Europe, consumption increased by 26% last year, driven by countries like Germany and the Netherlands.
