Bird flu confirmed in Benavente, Cascais, and Aveiro

In Benavente, Santarém district, an outbreak affecting captive birds, specifically roosters, peacocks, cranes, mallards, and pompom ducks, has been confirmed by a DGAV statement.

The outbreak detected in Cascais, Lisbon, originated from a wild lesser black-backed gull.

In Aveiro, an outbreak was also confirmed in a wild bird, a little egret.

Since the start of the year, Portugal has reported 27 outbreaks of avian flu infections.

Transmission of the virus to humans is rare, with sporadic cases reported worldwide. However, when it occurs, the infection can lead to severe clinical symptoms.

The DGAV has been urging all bird owners to adhere to biosecurity measures and good production practices to prevent contact between domestic and wild birds.

Any suspicion of avian flu infection must be reported to the DGAV.

The DGAV is a central service of the state’s direct administration with administrative autonomy.
