An outbreak of bird flu has been detected today in Oliveira do Bairro, Aveiro, affecting various species of exotic and ornamental birds kept in captivity.
An outbreak has also been confirmed in Chamusca, Santarém, among several captive exotic bird species.
This year, bird flu had already been detected in Aveiro at a farm with chickens, ducks, and geese, and in two yellow-legged gulls (a wild bird) and a little egret (a wild bird).
In Santarém district, outbreaks were confirmed this year at a commercial duck farming operation and among birds kept in captivity.
The total number of detected outbreaks this year has now risen to 31.
Transmission of the virus to humans is rare, with sporadic cases reported worldwide. However, when infections occur, they can lead to severe clinical conditions.
The DGAV has been urging all bird owners to adhere to biosecurity measures and good production practices to prevent contact between domestic and wild birds.
Any suspicion of bird flu infection should be reported to the DGAV.
DGAV is a central service of the direct state administration with administrative autonomy.
