Bird flu detected again in Portimão

A virus of subtype H5N1 was detected in a white stork, as detailed by the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV).

On July 18, an outbreak had already been confirmed in Portimão, in a yellow-legged gull.

The total number of outbreaks detected this year has now risen to 29.

At the beginning of the month, an outbreak had been confirmed in Aveiro and another in Madeira.

Transmission of the virus to humans is rare, with sporadic cases reported worldwide. However, when infection occurs, it can lead to a severe clinical picture.

DGAV has been urging all bird owners to adhere to biosecurity measures and good production practices, avoiding contact between domestic and wild birds.

Any suspicion of avian flu infection should be reported to DGAV.

DGAV is a central service of the State’s direct administration, with administrative autonomy.
