Bird flu detected in Setúbal. Animals were culled.

A case of bird flu has been detected in a domestic chicken coop in Alcácer do Sal, Setúbal, according to a statement today from the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV).

“[…] A new outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus has been confirmed in a domestic chicken coop located in the parish of Santa Maria do Castelo e Santiago and Santa Susana, municipality of Alcácer do Sal, district of Setúbal,” the DGAV noted.

The affected animals were culled, and the area was cleaned and disinfected.

Poultry farms in the restricted areas, within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak, are under surveillance.

The DGAV warned of the persistent circulation of the avian flu virus and reiterated the need to adhere to biosecurity measures and good production practices.

Contact between domestic and wild birds should be avoided, and hygiene procedures for facilities, equipment, and materials should be strengthened.
