
Porto Editora has announced the ten words to be voted on as the Word of the Year: “agente (IA)”, “apagão”, “eleições”, “elevador”, “flotilha”, “fogos”, “imigração”, “moderado”, “perceção” and “tarefeiro”.
Voting will be open on the website www.palavradoano.pt until the end of November.
The statement from the publishing group highlights, “More than just a choice, the Word of the Year is a reflection of our collective memory. The list of finalist words mirrors the themes and events that marked the year and was compiled based on more than 6,500 suggestions from the Portuguese public, the most searched words in the Infopédia Portuguese language dictionary, and ongoing language observation work carried out by Porto Editora, particularly in the media and social networks,” the statement reads.
Last year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of April 25, the most voted word was “liberdade” (freedom).
In previous editions, the chosen words were “liberdade” (2024), “professor” (2023), “guerra” (2022), “vacina” (2021), “saudade” (2020), “violência doméstica” (2019), “enfermeiro” (2018), “incêndios” (2017), “geringonça” (2016), “refugiado” (2015), “corrupção” (2014), “bombeiro” (2013), “entroikado” (2012), “austeridade” (2011), “vuvuzela” (2010) and “esmiuçar” (2009).
