Bluefin tuna fishing will be banned from Tuesday, given the current data on landings by the Portuguese fleet in the Atlantic Ocean, the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM) has announced.

“Considering the current data of the discharges made by the Portuguese fleet of the bluefin tuna species (‘thunnus thynnus’), in the Atlantic Ocean, east of 45.ºW […] fishing of the species and zone mentioned above is prohibited,” reads a note released by the DGRM.

This ban starts at 00:00 on Tuesday.

The DGRM is a central service of the State’s direct administration, with administrative autonomy, whose objective is the development of maritime safety and services, the implementation of fisheries policies and the preservation of resources.
