The body of a man was found floating this Saturday morning off the coast of Câmara de Lobos, on the island of Madeira.
A nearby maritime-tourist vessel raised the alarm at 10:55 AM, prompting the mobilization of crew members from the Funchal Lifesaving Station, as well as officers from the Funchal Local Maritime Police Command and the Judiciary Police (PJ), stated the National Maritime Authority in a communiqué.
“Upon arriving at the scene, the crew from the Lifesaving Station retrieved the victim from the water and transported him to the Funchal harbor quay, where a health delegate verified the death,” the organization added, noting that the causes of the incident remain unknown.
The statement also revealed that the body was taken to the Madeira Forensic Medical Office after contact with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and PJ procedures.
The Funchal Local Maritime Police Command has taken charge of the case.
The body of a woman in “advanced state of decomposition” washed ashore on Leirosa beach, also this Saturday, according to the commander of the Port of Figueira da Foz.
“It is a female body, but the age cannot be determined because it is in an advanced state of decomposition. The Judiciary Police were on site and are now handling the case,” explained Salvado Pires.
According to the commander, the alert was raised at 8:30 AM by the emergency number, 112, and attended by the Figueira da Foz Volunteer and Professional Firefighters and the Republican National Guard (GNR) of Paião, Figueira da Foz.
