The body of a missing fisherman was discovered Saturday morning at Ponta da Atalaia in Aljezur, confirmed the National Maritime Authority (AMN).
The individual had gone spearfishing with two friends and failed to return at the agreed time. The body was found south of Ponta da Atalaia.
“Following an alert from a diving team participating in the search operations coordinated by the Port Captain and the Local Command of the Lagos Maritime Police, crew members from the Sagres Lifeboat Station, elements from the Local Command of the Lagos Maritime Police, the Forensic Diving Group – Underwater Operations (GMF-OPS) of the Maritime Police, and a drone team from the Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters were involved,” stated the AMN.
After the “procedures of the Health Delegate and contact with the Public Prosecutor,” the body is set to be transported to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in the region.
The AMN noted that the Maritime Police’s Psychology Office continues to provide support to the victim’s family.
The Local Command of the Lagos Maritime Police is handling the case.
