
A woman’s body, believed to be around 40 years old, was found lifeless today in the Douro River on the right bank of the D. Maria Bridge in Porto, according to the Porto Fire Brigade and National Maritime Authority.
The body was retrieved from the water by divers from the Porto Fire Brigade’s diving unit, with the death pronounced by a doctor from the Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER).
A source from the fire department noted that the body “had not been in the water for long,” and resuscitation attempts were made but proved unsuccessful.
In a statement, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) reported receiving an alert at 6:37 am regarding the presence of a body on the right bank of the bridge.
Personnel from the Douro Maritime Police, Porto Fire Brigade, VMER from Santo António, and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) “immediately” responded to the scene.
Members of the Judiciary Police were also activated.
Following investigations by the Judiciary Police and authorization from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was transported by the fire department to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Porto.
The National Maritime Authority stated in their report that the causes of the incident are unknown.
