Book criticizes Government for “little ambition” in a Budget that “has no measures”

During remarks to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, Livre deputy Patrícia Gonçalves criticized the advancement of the budget presentation date, viewing it as an attempt to influence the municipal debate, and argued that the government showed “little political ambition” in this budget proposal, aiming for a “smoother approval” in parliament.

“In terms of form, it is a budget lacking measures, demonstrating little political ambition, attempting to be a management tool, while Livre believes the State Budget is a political instrument,” she stated.

The deputy announced that Livre will “present proposals aimed at improving people’s lives,” declining to elaborate on the government’s budget proposal due to limited time for analysis.

Nevertheless, the deputy expressed concern about the “reserves” outlined in the budget, which requires further analysis to understand its true impact, and mentioned the forecasted surplus for Social Security, highlighting the contributions of immigrant workers to this outcome.

Patrícia Gonçalves reiterated that Livre, considering it a political document, will “not give up nor refrain from having a role” in the budget proposal’s detailed discussion. However, the party’s decision on its voting stance in the general debate will be made later.

The PSD/CDS-PP government submitted the State Budget proposal for 2026 today, a day before the deadline and three days prior to Sunday’s municipal elections.

The State Budget proposal for 2026 is set to be discussed and voted on in general between October 27 and 28. The final overall vote is scheduled for November 27, following the detailed debate process.
