More than 4,000 incidents related to adverse weather were recorded in mainland Portugal between midnight and 7 a.m., mostly involving fallen trees and structures, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
On Wednesday, Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua announced on its website that most of the monuments in the municipality of Sintra, in the Lisbon district, would remain closed to the public due to the severe weather conditions.
“Following the adverse weather conditions that continue to affect Sintra, the Parque da Pena, Palácio Nacional da Pena, Chalet da Condessa d’Edla, Castelo dos Mouros, Parque e Palácio de Monserrate, and Convento dos Capuchos will stay closed this Thursday, March 20, for safety reasons,” the management company announced.
These monuments, located within the southern forest perimeter of the Serra de Sintra, were closed due to “adverse weather conditions” and the “high risk of falling trees,” according to the local municipal authority.
Outside this forest perimeter, the Palácio Nacional de Queluz and the Palácio Nacional de Sintra remain open today.
