Brazil expresses “solidarity with the Government and the people of Portugal”

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its sorrow following the derailment of the Elevador da Glória in Lisbon this afternoon, which resulted in the deaths of over a dozen people and left several seriously injured.

Offering condolences to the families of the victims, the Brazilian government conveyed its solidarity to the government and people of Portugal.

The Brazilian government also noted that, “so far, there are no reports of Brazilian victims,” but assured that “the Consulate-General in Lisbon remains available to assist Brazilian citizens and their families through the consular duty line (+351 962 520 581).”

The Elevador da Glória derailed on Wednesday at 18:04 on Calçada da Glória in Lisbon.

Emergency services reported that the accident resulted in 15 deaths and 18 injuries, with five people in critical condition and 13 sustaining minor injuries.

The government has declared a national day of mourning this Thursday.

The Elevador da Glória, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores Square with the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto. The route covers approximately 265 meters and is a popular attraction among tourists.
